چکیده

We present results of the hosts of four high-redshift (z 2) and high luminosity (M B < ?28 mag) QSOs, three radio-quiet one radio-loud, imaged in R and K bands. The extensions to the nuclear unresolved source are most likely due to the hosts galaxies of these QSOs. The luminosities and sizes of the hosts overlap with those of actively star-forming galaxies in the nearby Universe. Radial prooles over the outer resolved areas roughly follow de Vaucouleur or exponential disk laws. These properties give support to the host galaxy interpretation of the extended light around QSOs at high-redshift. If the hosts we have detected are indeed galaxies, young massive and luminous galaxies are not only a characteristic of radio-loud QSOs, but of QSOs as an entire class. 1 Introduction The study of high redshift (z 2) QSOs ooers a unique opportunity to investigate conditions in the early universe. In the currently favoured cold dark matter cosmogony, this epoch corresponds to the period when normal galaxies formed through hierarchical coalescence 3], thereby giving rise to enormous concentrations of gas in the center of the galaxies, which could feed a central black hole 7] or provoke a massive starburst episode 12]. As such, this picture is consistent with the observation that the QSO population peaks at these redshifts 10]. Searches for galaxies hosting high-redshift QSOs were rst carried out in radio-loud objects, with spectacular results: luminosities several magnitudes brighter than the most luminous galaxies in the nearby Universe were observed 8]. However, radio-loud quasars are only a small fraction (< 1%) of all QSOs, and many of the conclusions drawn from radio-loud objects

We present results of the hosts of four high-redshift (z ≈ 2) and high luminosity (MB ∼ −28 mag) QSOs, three radio-quiet one radio-loud, imaged in R and K bands. The extensions to the nuclear unresolved source are most likely due to the hosts galaxies of these QSOs, with luminosities at rest-frame 2300Å of at least 3−7 per cent of the QSO luminosity, and most likely around 6−18 per cent of the ...

Qso Host Galaxies at Z=2.3

Images are discussed of 6 QSOs at z=2.3, one QSO-like IRAS source at z=2.3, and one QSO at z=1.1, taken with resolution 0.6 to 0.9 arcsec. 5 of the QSOs are radio-quiet. All QSOs except one are just resolved, while the IRAS source has definite structure. In some cases, part of the QSO fuzz appears to be a close companion rather than a concentric host galaxy. The luminosities implied for the hos...

The Hosts of Ultraluminous Infrared Galaxies

Complete samples of ultraluminous infrared galaxies (ULIGs) have been imaged at R-band and K-band from Mauna Kea. Here we present a preliminary analysis of the host galaxy magnitudes and the 1-D radial profiles for a subset of objects in the IRAS 1-Jy sample of ULIGs (z < 0.3), and compare these properties with recently published data for “low-z” QSOs. ULIGs in the 1-Jy sample reside in luminou...

STAR FORMATION IN THE HOSTS OF HIGH-z QSOs: EVIDENCE FROM SPITZER PAH DETECTIONS

We present Spitzer rest frame mid-infrared spectroscopy of 12 z 2 millimeter-bright type 1 QSOs, selected from unlensed and lensed QSO samples and covering a range of AGN optical luminosities L5100 1⁄4 1045Y10 erg s . On top of the AGN continuum, we detect PAH emission from luminous star formation in nine objects individually, as well as in the composite spectrum for the full sample. PAH lumino...

Host Galaxies of Lensed Luminous Quasars at Z ∼ 2

We present H-band observations of gravitationally lensed QSO host galaxies obtained with NICMOS on HST as part of the CfA-Arizona-Gravitational-Lens-Survey (CASTLES). The detections are greatly facilitated by the lensing magnification in these systems; we find that most hosts of radio-quiet QSOs (RQQ) at z ∼ 2 are of modest luminosity (L < L *). They are 2-5 times fainter than the hosts of radi...
